If you have a hard disk full of (pirated ;)) videos, music and photos, this is the best player with most diverse codec support. I agree with other reviewers about no hard buttons and codec issues. 1 component, 1 HDMI and 1 audio optical out.Really nice device, would definitely recommend it. It has 2 usb ports to attach up to 2 HDDs/flash drives at a time. I think WD has brought out updates to support more codecs but ya it won't play just about everything. The video playback is good and you can return to the point where you left off (it works sometimes only don't know what the logic is behind this).Overall a great product.
But, unfortunately, I found one critical issue about subtitle. I hope they can fix this problem at the next firmware upgrade.
I used a SW which converts smi to srt, and then it works very fine. ------ updated comments ------I just found out that WD TV HD media player is not compatible with smi format.
I just bought this product. I just googled about this issue, and found that there were already several reports on it.
Now I am very satisfied with this product, and strongly recommend to anyone who wants to watch things on large TV set, not on tiny laptop screen. Its interface is very intuitive, and it works well with any USB storage device.
I have many of video files with external subtitles, and those subtitles often need to display "multiple lines" at one time, but WD TV HD media player only shows the first line of those multiple lines.
maybe in a few years the technology will be better, don't waste your money. 3/4th of my avi files don't even work and some of them somehow do, TV doesn't recognize when plugged in via HDMI, files are IMPOSSIBLE to navigate through, instead of a list of file names you can navigate through with ease, you have to go over each file one by one until you know what file it is, this is just trash.
Some times you may need to reset it to factory defaults to make it work fine. No problems so far (2 months). I connected my 1TB western digital hard disk to it and it can play a variety of video formats (including H.264 Blue ray DVD rips). Watching Lost series and Planet earth Blue ray DVD rips and the quality of the videos are too good on a 47 inch LCD TV.
The only thing it can't do is DTS audio (which can be taken care of by having an A/V receiver that has a DTS decoder). Most of what I have are.mkv files, and I was blown away with the quality on my 42" tv. I was really skeptical about getting this, but I read up on it and figured it had to be pretty good with all the positive reviews. It came this weekend and it played everything I could throw at it.
